The deal signals a clear reset for the Mavericks, who are officially moving on from the controversial trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Lakers last year in a package centered around Davis.
That deal was orchestrated by former general manager Nico Harrison, who was fired in November after a slow start to the season. The late-night move angered fans, and Davis had been the subject of trade rumors ever since Harrison’s dismissal.
Davis has been sidelined since mid-January with a torn ligament in his left hand. Surgery is not required, and he is still a few weeks away from returning, based on the original four-to-six week recovery timeline.
Washington, meanwhile, has dramatically shifted course after back-to-back seasons of 67 and 64 losses. The Wizards traded for Trae Young last month and now add Davis to a growing core that includes Alex Sarr, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 draft.
Once healthy, Davis and Young will headline a roster filled with young talent, including Sarr, Kyshawn George, Bub Carrington, Bilal Coulibaly, and standout rookie Tre Johnson.
Davis played just 31 of a possible 84 games during his two partial seasons with Dallas, including two play-in tournament appearances last year.
For the Mavericks, the move clears the way to fully build around star rookie Cooper Flagg. The trade opens up frontcourt minutes and flexibility as Dallas evaluates its future, including the potential return of Kyrie Irving.
Flagg, averaging 20.1 points per game and still not yet 20 years old, has seen Dallas lose all three games during his current 30-plus-minute stretch. The team is on a season-worst five-game losing streak and sits 12th in the Western Conference at 19–31.
Irving, a nine-time All-Star, is unlikely to play this season after tearing his left ACL last March.
Contract-wise, Russell holds a player option for next season, Hardy is under contract through 2026–27 with a team option for 2027–28, and Exum is set to become a free agent this summer.
